I completely agree. They first came up for toolbars and that's where I do think that they provide a less distracting interface. After all, menu items where never fully 3d, either.
But elsewhere they should be used carefully. Even Office XP isn't using them everywhere. Just look at the Options dialog in Outlook XP. It's all plain old 3d buttons.
