That's interesting...When I was working as a government employee for all those years, they loved to see us out walking at lunchtime. However, since being employed by a major financial institution, while they 'encourage' health and fitness, don't leave that keyboard! I now do aerobics every night when I get home to compensate for the amount of time I spend sitting!

>>>My wife and I purchased a Life Fitness tread mill a few months ago. I am not small so I needed something that could stand up to my size. The model we got also absorbs more shock than any other model. Be sure you check out what you want before you purchase it, if that is possible. In my area there is a great selection to try.
>>>
>>>Now the important thing is to use the tread mill once you get it. I use a Polar Heart Monitor to check my heart rate and stay at the proper level. Start slow and record your progress.
>>>
>>>I have a chart (made with Word) which has the date, speed, time per lap, resting heart rate, heart rate at each quarter mile (lap) and after a two minute cool down (reduced speed). Then I sit down for 5 minutes and record my recovery rate. What is interesting is that my wife and I both have stated we get a better work out from the tread mill than walking around a track. I do not know how that is possible but all things being equal, that is, speed, distance and heart rate, the tread mill seems to make you work harder. I walk five days a week.
>>>
>>>Having a tread mill allows walking which is a great low impact exercise. You can exercise year round. In a few weeks I will begin my weight training program and alternate walking 2 miles twice a week on the tread mill, walking one mile and weight training three days a week and walk around the track on weekends. Mix up your program to get more benefit.
>>>
>>>Be sure you get your wife involved and encourage each other to exercise. You will both benefit from this and feel great! If you need any information about suggested heart rate to burn fat or to increase arobic activity let me know. There is a formula for determining that information.

>>Great advice! We do plan on both using it and appreciate the encouragement. I'm big for my size (else why the need for a treadmill? <g>) and want it both for weight loss and cardiovascular stuff as well. I have to admit that I was surprised that my BP was 103/78 which isn't bad for being about 60-80 pounds overweight. The biggest challenge to programing IMO is its sedintary nature.

>Very true! Sitting down all day (and night) does nothing positive for your body! I have been working for my present company for almost two years. Everywhere I have worked I would go out at lunchtime and walk. Sometimes I would walk with others. At this place you cannot walk. It is a huge plant (1 million + square feet) and the outside is a huge parking lot. Lots of concrete everywhere, with forklifts running in all directions, an assembly line and activity of all sorts.
>
>Walking at lunchtime was a great way to exercise, release stress and helped solve programming problems. Sitting down in one spot is “not my cup of tea”! Just keep the smoke coming from the keyboard and management is happy. Do not think smart – just smoke that keyboard. Watch out Dilbert!
