Open the file in Paint (under Programs > Accessories). Then magnify the view (View > Zoom > Large size) and click in the toolbox on the SELECT icon (rectangular).
Select use this tool to select the desired image (drag with the left mouse button) and copy the selection (Ctrl+C). Create a new file (Ctrl+N) and paste the selection from the clipboard (Ctrl+V). Now you can change the backcolor to white and save this image as BMP file with a new name.

If you need to use this image for a button, you need to resize the image with another imaging program (I use photoshop where I can change the resolution). You can paste it into a Word document for example and scale the image, and make a screenshot from the smaller image.
Another tip: Open office programs (like Outlook for example) and make a screenshot. Paste it in Paint and you can copy a large number of good images for treeviews and buttons, just the same way as described.
