I think it can be said that Canadians place little importance on our military outside of peace keeping. In fact the 4 deaths from friendly fire last week were the first combat (not peace keeping) deaths since the Korean war in the 50's. The Afghans that these snipers killed were also the first enemy to be killed since the Korean war as well. This national sqeamishness with war combined with a distaste for hero worship makes the above quote understandable.
