>>This is great news, but based on the following snippet form that article, it looks some fools in high places need some serious therapy and a reality check about the costs and reasons for war: "Canadians don't kill -- they don't even use the word kill; that's the problem," he said. "I think the military is not sure that the government is prepared to accept the fact, let alone celebrate the fact ... that Canadian soldiers do sometimes end up killing people."

>I think it can be said that Canadians place little importance on our military outside of peace keeping. In fact the 4 deaths from friendly fire last week were the first combat (not peace keeping) deaths since the Korean war in the 50's. The Afghans that these snipers killed were also the first enemy to be killed since the Korean war as well. This national sqeamishness with war combined with a distaste for hero worship makes the above quote understandable.

Evan;

Yes, Canada can afford to have an attitude that does not incorporate the necessity of a strong military to insure its freedom. It has a serious partner to its south that thinks otherwise. Our cultures, language and interests are similar so why invest in a large military? Why have a strong military presence?

The route that Canada has chosen is one that is allowed by circumstance. I just wish the rest of the world thought in that same manner. Attempting to be the worlds "peace keeper" sucks! It does not gain you any friends as your friends just have to put up with you sometimes.

When I was in the Air Force I used the term "Peace through War"! That is how we maintain our freedom. Not all of our wars are publicized. Some actions are small.

Too bad mankind cannot change its nature. It costs less to help people help themselves than to make war. But that is not good for political activists.
