Arthur,

>How does one quit the GUI back to a command prompt, like exiting Windows back to DOS, without shutting down the system? I used to do reasonably well with SCO Unix at the command prompt, but trying to find something in either Gnome or KDE is driving me nuts. I'd rather just type the command.

Can't you quit to the prompt from the "Start" button (or whatever equivalent button KDA and Gnome have? Or are there only shutdown options? I use FVWM, so I just made a menu for myself that restarts or quits X.

Like Leland said, you can get to virtual terminals using CTRL+ALT+F keys where N is 1 thru 6. F7 gets you back to the GUI. I suppose you could kill the 'xinit' and 'X' jobs to bring down all of X, but that seems a bit harsh. What is the situation now...the GUI options only let you totally restart your system instead of dumping you back to the console command line?

CTRL+ALT+BackSpace may also work for you, but that seems like more of an emergency bug-out to me...make sure you have all your apps closed, etc. before trying that one...

Good luck!
