So do many system code changes.

You make it sound so easy <s>. So you have several hundred users/sites all with a SQL backend. Its still a major ball-ache having to update SP's too. In my case, I routinely use Doug Hennig's StartApp routine. I am making changes to systems most every day. I dial in to the site, upload a new version of the EXE into a "download" directory on a server. The next time the user loads the system, their EXE's are updated on their local machine without having to touch the "real" server or mess around with it's SP's. Works every time and has done for years. Point being, there are a number of "takes" on this situation and what works for one may or may not work for another.
Just my two penneth.
