Didn't find any patches. I also played with various settings, getting failure notices on some of them. Strangely, when reviewing settings for "virusscan" (what starts at startup) it had a note that it is not supported on WinME, WinNT and Win2000, yet it had been starting up fine since install over a year ago.

Jim,
This is old (since April 17th) but might be it.
Check
HKEY_LoCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
and
HKEY_LoCAL_MACHINE\System\currentcontrolset\services
nodes. If you see entries starting with 'WinK' then it's win32.Klez virus. It disables the scanners as part of its infection.
If it's that check symantec, bitdefender sites for removal. Hope it's not.
