Yes, it'll open database when you open table because table exists seprately from it and has backlink to the DBC. A view exists in the DBC only and is invisble for VFP until DBC is open.
Yes, you can create index on view as you would on cursor or table.

However I tried you suggestion and it seemed to solve the problem.
