The word of god. Which has changed so many times that its easier to ignore than keep up with.

Once upon a time eating meat on a Friday was a hell worthy tresspass. Now god says "Ok, I was just fooling around with the meat-Friday thing. You can eat meat whenever you want, but not during these 40 days. If thats ok with you peasants of course. Just as long as you come in and put your money in the basket. Thats all I'm asking for. Please?"

After enough of that people should start to realize that the word of god is more or less the personal agenda of those in charge of the church at the time of writing.
