Thanks; I was wondering, what the rule was. I think the paragraph you pasted has clarified my doubts.

I think the spelling is father-in-law.

I understand "Hilmar" is a Norwegian name; my parents told me it means something like "great warrior". Well, while we are not exactly fond of war, you can also be a "warrior" in some noble cause... So there is really no need to change my name. (I couldn't find my name in www.ivillage.com, which is suposed to have a large collection of names.)
