Certainly, I am not accustomed to use the ß, although I know where to find it on the keyboard!
I also understand that replacing ß with ss can, in rare circumstances, cause confusion
("Trinke den Wein in Maßen, nicht in Massen.")

Don't care about that. "They" thought German would be a much to complicated language for everyone
in the country to write. So we've just had a "Rechtschreibreform" and that almost completely
abandoned (?spelling?) the ß. And while they do this they cut down education costs wherever they
can, and produce even more idiots and low skilled workers, finally becoming unemployed and fashist.
We have 4 Mio. people unemployed but need to "import" programmers from India because we cannot
recrut enough high skilled persons from our own country.

Imagine You're a child writing an exam and making errors. The teacher tells You "bad shot boy".
Two weeks later You write another and the same teacher tells You "Well done Frank".

I have to admit, I did not care about that up to now ( we have time until 2005 when the old
writing will actually become wrong). So I was not even sure how to *correctly* write Your
"wine-sentence". and found this at the "DUDEN-WebSite" (see very far down. We do not want to
bore the others too much with that<g>.

Anyway in this particular case it remains the same "Trinke den Wein in Maßen, nicht in Massen."
will be correct even after 2005 as well as in real life <s>

Zur s-Schreibung

In Zukunft soll ß nur noch nach langem Vokal und nach Diphthong (Doppellaut) stehen
(In der Schweiz bleibt es bei der bisherigen Regelung, nach der ß im Allgemeinen nicht
verwendet wird). Man schreibt also weiterhin: das Maß – des Maßes; außen; gießen – er gießt.
Nach kurzem Vokal soll hingegen nur noch Doppel-s stehen (bisher stand hier je nach dem
folgenden Buchstaben teils ss, teils ß). Man schreibt neu: der Fluss, die Flüsse; es passt,
passend; wässrig, wässerig (bisher: der Fluß, aber die Flüsse; es paßt, aber passend; wäßrig,
aber wässerig). Die Erleichterung, die mit dieser Lösung angestrebt wird, besteht darin, dass
in mehr Fällen als bisher die Schreibung aus der Lautung abgeleitet werden kann: das Floß –
es floss; der Ruß – der Schluss; das Maß – das Fass. In der Schweiz bleibt es bei der
bisherigen Regelung, nach der ß im Allgemeinen nicht verwendet wird.
