I don't think that PATCH26 was "designed" for OS compatibility issues. Rather, It was for "fast CPU" issues.
I don't have XP either, so can't really help. But it may help to investigate what options are available as regards "compatibility" vis-a-vis a PIF or PIF-like thingy of XP. I have heard talk that there are options offered for various MS OSes. There may also be settings for for HIMEM stuff, files, buffers, etc.
