I've heard that it would be possible to do the communications with the winsock OCX, do you know something more about that ?

An alternative to this would be to use a communication server (often provided by the manufacturer of the hospital information system), that can give you plain ASCII files instead of HL7 data. I don't know of any ready to use VFP classes for parsing HL7.
