I should have clarified, I am using LPD instead of CUPS to print.

top looks normal, This machine is only being used as a print server to an EPSON 5000+ wide format dot matrix printer.

The only active line in /etc/printcap is:

lp:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd:sh
