Funny,
I really think of Oceanside as another one of those California coast towns that are a bit of a stretch to get to (5 being the parking lot that it usually is)...
I've had two Navy tours in San Diego, with my last tour being my retirement tour - and it was a no brainer to plant roots and stay..
After all the places I have lived in the United States, including HI for four years - I have to say the weather in San Diego is the best anywhere.
Course, there is that $%^&*_@# traffic everyday
... In 65 one must believe the traffic was a bit lighter, yes?

It was a bit different in 1965 which was my first trip to San Diego - hiway 101 was one lane each direction to Los Angeles and there was no I-5! Wall to wall orange trees on both sides of the road and now it is wall to wall houses! :)
