I was looking at doing an app a few years back that was going to be running at 9 different locations, plus the corporate offices. My plan was going to be to run MSDE at each location, SQL Server at the corp. office, and replicate data fairly regularly from the remote locations up to the corp. location (every few minutes so the info was nearly real time). This way, the WAN connection could go down but the remote locations would keep on working. When the connection came back up, the servers would replicate as usual (with just a bit more info to pass up to the server). This might work for you.
