Application Role - to use or not to use

Scenario:
1)Large enterprise system with a LOT of data.
2)Several of the biggest tables (approaching 2gb limit after being split vertically) being moved to SQL Server (SS). Other tables staying in VFP.
3)Views in the VFP database being changed to remote views of the SQL Server tables for those tables moved to SS
4)Data Manager class being created for manipulation/querying of tables in SS in addition to the Remote Views
5)Database will connect to the SS database, data manager will connect to the SS database (SQLCONNECT)

Questions:
1)Is an application role tied to a connection?
2)Will the application role need to be set for the database and the data manager?
3)We are not sharing a connection in the database - will all views that open respect the application role?
4)Would a user in SS with appropriate access to the database be just as good? IOW do I benefit from using an application role?
