I have several tables in which dates are stored in character fields in YYYYMMDD format. Is there any way to display or allow input in a grid using these fields as the controlsource for a column, but display in MM/DD/YYYY date format?

I created a custom control using a container with a text box that can display and edit these "date" fields in a MM/DD/YYYY date format in an edit screen. But when I place this control in a grid column, set it as the current control, Sparse = .f. it displays the same date for each row in the table. Any ideas?
