I think you totally skimmed over Steve's point.

If John comes to the UT with stone tablets in his arms and says "Thou shalt learn .NET at great costs to oneself", there should be some debate as to whether or not this is good advice. The opinions aren't what matter, its the evidence and arguments behind those opinions.
