IOW I can't see the need for grouping. SQL checks if record is a match for a particular group (Ino there Town in your case with maxdate of that group). If it's includes in result list. That's not 'group by' but an indirect grouping. Glad you solved.

I guess, I just understood your original code. You're right, it's an indirect grouping and I just didn't understand it, because I never tried :)
