isdate(" / / ") will return false thats sure
can you tell me what value Mydate would be having after issuing
vbObject.Mydate = CTOD(" / / ")

VB cant convert this blank format in a date value.
in my knowledge if you need a function that would check on blank/empty and valid date, it would be a user defined function.
