If you're already going to have some code to show this description text, how about a wider label below the grid, which would be refreshed in each ARCC of the lower grid? Depending on the expected length of the text it could wrap to two or more lines; the users would understand immediately after clicking on a couple of things in this grid. The up side, IMO, is that it doesn't cover anything and is not in such a small font and limited space as the tooltips and status messages are. Besides, if you got more text, you can actually use a disabled editbox instead of label, so it would be scrollable.
