>>>>>>>>I'll try to make this brief. I am green when it comes to NT Server, but eager to learn. I am trying to learn by installing NT server on a spare machine I have and connecting one win95 pc. The install seemed to go okay, but I must say I learned a litle from that experience. I haven't got much further as I can't get my pc to connect to the server. I tried netbeui and fiddled with tcpip to no avail. I have to ne2000 compatible cards of the same type and a rj45 cross over cable to connect them. the cards are from dlink(de220et). Can anyone give me a hint onhow to configure the cards/network? I know this is pretty vague, but any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks much!

>>>>>>>First you need to determine whether your physical network is working. Since you're not using a hub, hopefully one or both cards have some status lights you can look at.
>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>You need to have the same protocol bound to each card to use Microsoft networking. You should use NetBEUI or TCP/IP here. If you have any interest in web server stuff, choose TCP/IP. (You can even bind both protocols to each card if you want.)

>>>>>>>Next is to determine whether you are setting up a workgroup or a domain. If a domain, you have to install NT Server as a primary domain controller (PDC). This can be selected only during setup. If you did not select this, your only alternative is to reinstall NT Server. Once you have this set up, you need to set up the Win95 machine to log on to that domain. This is done through the Network app of the control panel, by choosing "Client for Microsoft Networks" and going to the property page.

>>>If you haven't purchase the NT Resource Kit yet, checkout www.bookpool.com. I just purchased one from them couple of weeks ago and you can't beat the price.
>>>BTW, I'm also new to NT Server. Although I've been using NT Server/Windows 95 duel-boot configuration at home for quite some time, my company will be upgrading to NT Server from NetWare by end of this month. I see a lot of fun times for both of us!!!

>You might like to check out the book NT Server Unleashed, by Sams. I found it a very useful reference. It also mentions several of the quirks in the NT. I think it is currently available for free as an online book at the Online Bookshelf of Macmillan Publishing. You can register for free at www.mcp.com. It sounds like I´m advertizing, but I´ve found several great and interesting books there on BackOffice, the Win NT/95 registries, etc. By the way, did the two machines ever connect? (I went through the Netware ---> NT experience last year, so I fully appreciate your problems! :) , and believe me, many more lay down the road, but now I would never go back from NT!

Thanks for the tip on the NT book. No, I haven't connected my test server to my Win95 machine yet, but I will start working on it again soon. I do have several months before my company migrates to NT at my site. BTW - the error message I receive on my 95 machine when I am refused connection is "Domain server not found. You can continue but...bla bla bla". I did install NT as a PDC and am trying to use TCP/IP as protocol. Give me a message if anything sticks out in your mind for this type of error. Thanks again for responding, and I will check out the site.

john.
