Interesting idea. You don't need a physical printer to test - just install the printer/driver.

I tested with an Epson FX-80 driver, reports 120 horizontal and 144 vertical (PRTINFO(8) and PRTINFO(11) respectively). However, Generic/Text Only reports 600/600 (same as my HP LaserJet 5).
