Not meaning to add fuel to the fire but what the heck! A subject which I have mentioned previously is that New York City was the first city in the United States to recognize the rights of a child to not be killed by his/her parents. Until 1895 it was not against the law to kill your own child.
I do not think laws protect anyone and are only meant to allow society to have a premise to punish someone for what is perceived to be a wrongful deed. If you look at murder in the United States only 13% of murderers go to jail. So if you want to kill someone there is an 87% chance you will not go to jail.
Laws are very important as they keep legislators, police, attorneys, and judges to name a few, gainfully employed.
