They need news - yes, that may be an even better explanation of some kind of news.
With respect to the gene pool - in a large population, the percentage of each type of gene (for instance, blond vs. black) tends to remain fairly constant, unless circumstances favor a certain trait. This is independent of whether the gene is recessive or dominant.
