I have an existing app that uses a MSSQL 7 backend and ODBC to access the data. I'm also using NT 4.0 SP6a WS and Server, latest IE, and VFP7 SP1.
Today, I have been approached by our sales people to add into the app, the ability to run the app disconnected from the network (i.e. in a car on the road, in flight, etc.). When they have a chance to connect to the database, it needs to be able to synchronize the data.
My first thoughts are to take advantage of the VFP database engine to get and hold a subset of the apps data that would pertain to sales (i.e. customer data, job data, etc.). Let them change/add to this local data and update these changes when they reconnect to the network.
I was wondering if any of you could give me some advice on how to approach this. Has anyone else done this type of program? If so, what kind of pitfalls do I need to watch for? Is there a better way to do this?
I have about all of the VFP books you can find, so I was wondering if there is anything else I can refer to on this kind of subject. I don't expect anyone to solve this problem for me, I would just like to know what I'm getting into.
BTW, VFP 8 is sounding great!
Thanks in advance to any help!!
Don
