It doesn't sound like you have the management tools installed (doh for me ... sorry).
When I do a Ctrl+Alt+Del I see two instances of SQL related processes running.
SQLSERVR and SQLMANGR.
You can also go to the ODBC Data Sources and set up a User DSN using the following steps:
1. Launch the ODBC Data Sources (Start / Settings / Administrative Tools / Data Sources on Win2000 Professional.
2. Select the User DSN tab.
3. Press the Add button.
4. Select the driver for which you want to set up a data source by scrolling all the way down the list to SQL Server. Select it and then press Finish.
5. Enter a name and description for the connection and then click on the server combo box. If you do not see a SQL Server in the list you'll know the installation didn't take place and you should try again.
