I suspect the printers you have been having problems with escape codes with are GDI or 'host-based' printers that instead of having a cpu on the printer utilize the computer's cpu. I hate to say it, but that is the wave of the future-almost all printers are moving to USB, host-based printing (saves the manufacturers $ and the printers can sell for less so the customers that only use windows programs are typically happy). I've run into this numerous times myself. If a printer is fairly inexpensive you can almost bet it is a GDI printer!
