I think it goes without question that I have user permissions to make the changes on the linux side from windows using Samba.

I think Samba is the key -- I don't know much about Linux/Samba, but from what little I have read Samba "converts windows file commands so Linux can understand them" -- is this right? I am assuming from my user that they only see the read-only check box in WE and there is nowhere to enter the 3 digit attribute code that unix/linux uses.
