I tend to agree.
I think that the major reason why Linux is not going to be the next desktop is the difficulty in installing applications.
I setup a user, who I would say is an accomplished Windows user, who wanted to try Linux. Fine, I installed the Caldera Distro, which I prefer for "Desktop" usage, but now I am finding him contacting me every other day about tar this tar that, rpm this rpm that. Until the Linux distros make it easier to install applications, it will stay what it is, a fabulous O/S for Operating network services.
