Isn't it installed with the OS? There is an "Error checking" option but it doesn't say how long since it has been used either. So I guess that my question is also how to test for (2) whether a defrag tool is installed and (3) the date that error checking was last performed on a given drive.

I don't know about checking from VFP, but I want to answer the other part. NT 4 has no built-in defrag tool. Windows 2000 Professional, OTOH, does have one. I understand Windows 2000 Professional is the OS which was generally expected to be called NT 5.
