The best movies of the year typically are released at Christmas time. Once reason is because the movie is fresh in the mind of Oscar voters. Christmas is also the biggest (highest gross) movie day of the year in the US.

The rule to be eligible for an Oscar: The movie must play for one week inside LA city limits during the year. When it comes time to announce the winners, pay attention to best director. 90% of the time, that movie will win best picture.
