After I sent the message, I actually figured out what my problem was. I had downloaded code from syncfusion that did an override of the PAINT method. My initial problem was that the ALIGNMENT property no longer worked when I defined each column. What I realized afterwards was that the code in the PAINT method used DRAWSTRING, so I needed to set the alignment as one of the DRAWSTRING parameters.

So I'm OK for now and have what I need, but I'll still check those sites out.
