OK. Well, I thought that VFP got its time from the computer clock, and therefore I suspected the reason might be a program that stopped reacting.

You could also try and see what happens if you use other time functions: datetime() or seconds().

Or perhaps the program uses the correct time, bur for some unknown reason the StatusBar isn't refreshing. You could test this theory, displaying a counter variable after the time.
