I was able to find a setting to disable the disk caching from within XP by going to Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Disk Drives/Properties/Policies. Is this what you refer to by "switching off disk buffering" ?
If so, I will have my customer try this to see if it resolves the issue.
