>>I got a 'chuckle' out of your post. :o) I worked as a government civilian employee for many years (after leaving the military). After I finally left (June 2001) and took outside employment, I learned that the one person who was the joke of an office group (for never knowing anything, getting things wrong, etc) became the manager. Just figures... People who know nothing and don't want to learn are promoting the same... seen it too many times!

I have learned to keep my blinders on and do the best job I can for whomever I work for. I feel that if I get my assignents done on or ahead of time and satisfy the customer, then I can go home holding my head up. I cant change the system, but at no time will I let a manager off the hook when I am asked my opinion. Which they have to do twice a year during my reviews.

Bret:

Your words sound like my experience and feeling. Also, twice a year I have to answer a number of HR designated questions for my reviews, over the corporate Intranet. I truly enjoy articulating my version and interpretation of reality and I am very pointed in doing so.

The “good old boy” club all too often rewards incompetence, if you know what I mean. Little things like, “don’t rock the boat” come to mind. I quietly and within professional limits often create tidal waves when it is called for. I do not tolerate incompetence and at the same time know when it is politically advantageous to remain quiet.

Let me say I have learned how to work within most systems of management and have positive impact or I look for another job when I see it is truly hopeless. Some environments will never change for the better. The often-used term “corporate culture” along with other such terms tend to make me ill.

Above all keep a smile on your face at all times so they will think you are crazy. :)
