Mark,

It is my understanding (because I have never dealt with remote views) this approach would not work with data outside of VFP since Sybase doesn't know what to do with SUBSTRING. Hopefully someone else will jump in here and have a solution for you. If you are using the view designer in VFP 7.0 then I would advise you to use either eView or ViewEditor instead. There are some shortcomings to the VFP view editor that are documented around the UT. I have heard that these shortcomings have been addressed in VFP 8.

SUBSTRING(cdesc,1,50)
in the "Functions and expressions" textbox , and clicked the Add button, the view designer added quotation marks to the expression and saving of that view didn't work because I got a connectivity error. What I'm trying to say here is that I can't create those fields by means of the VFP 7.0 view designer tool. That's why I sought in that direction.
