I said "that level of detail". It is not the developers' job to coordinate each other - it is the project manager's job, alone. Of course they know the big picture - they just don't need to see it with as high a resolution nor at as high a refresh rate, and it is an error to waste resources informing them with constant meetings where time is spent on issues irrelevant to them.
Here's another idea on the subject. I haven't specifically tried this, but I probably will the next time I work with someone new, taking a page from extreme programming. Before you let somebody work at home, the two of you can work as a 2-person developer team for a day or two. I can't think of a better way to get to know another developer's strengths, weaknesses, style, and expectations, and vice versa.
