|You also mention WRT54G. In the other message, I've been suggested two |links. Which one is the best to look for?
The WRT54G is an access point + router + 4 port hub
WAP54G is just an access point
CHOOSE 1
An access point is a wireless hub. If you already have enough hard ports in your network you can use the WAP54G. However, when I bought mine, the price was the same as the WRT54G and it was a simple choice - there are never enough ports :} and for FREE!
THEN you need a PC-CARD for the laptop -for example, Linksys WPC54G (whose driver latest version is for whom, the latest driver version is
3.10.39.7
|What should I look for exactly on the box when purchasing it in order to |assure I have the latest?
I would not worry - the upgrade proceedure is simple
a)download from Linksys site (approx 3 mb at worst)
b)run a simple task to upload to box or card
however
WRT54G firmware 1.02.01 4Mar3003.
|So, if I understand correctly, at first, you connect a cable to it to |configure it. Then, you go wireless. But, if you wish, you can still }|connect directly to fix a setting, right? That would assume those wireless |network card do support a twisted connection, right?
you hard connect to either box (WAP or WRT) to configure it standalone, you need a RJ45 e-port to do this. Then hard connect it to your network. The primary configuration would be its network address and things such as wether or not it will be a DHCP server. The wireless properties are a seperate step (you could do all at once but,) make sure the box has a way to be addressed after you finish.
I have trouble reading this reply - don'f feel bad if you also do :}
