But what I still do not understand is why .F. would be treated differently than .T.

The behavior is consistent with this scenario (and maybe others), so check for something that moves the record pointer when the field is marked false - even a GO RECNO('MyTable') IN MyTable might trigger the implicit lock to fire. It could be in your checkbox or grid events, in the DBC, etc.
