I bought back when eBay was still new and the thought that what I got might not be legal never crossed my mind. It wasn't until a couple years later when piracy got to be such a hot topic that I started to wonder. The CDs look official, but they don't have that hologram sticker on them, so it's likely pirated. I still have them, but I no longer have it installed.

From what I've heard since then, piracy is a huge problem on there, so yeah, I'd say you got lucky.
