Portage is 40 miles north of Madison on the Wisconsin River. It is easily accessible off of I90-94, Hwy78 and US51. It is beautiful there of course (just like the rest of Wisconsin) and has the richest black soil I have ever seen. If only the winters were not so long! I remember snow storms in May and months of snowmobiling...and then there is those hot, sticky summers and the mosquitos! Swarms of them. I'm sure I received more toxins in my system from running behind the mosquito spraying trucks when I was young than from anything else in my lifetime. I have relatives all over Wisconsin and many up north near Bloomer (my father's parents moved there directly from Norway). We used to go to Bloomer in the summer.

>Well, it's 72 in here. :) The temperature should be up in the 50s before I need to venture out in a couple days.

>Holmen is just north of La Crosse. 3ish hours from Madison. I've heard of Portage, but I'm drawing a blank on where it is.

>>Not to be confused with white flakes floating through our air here in NC which are blossoms! :o) Oh yeah, it was 78 degrees one day this week and it is in the 70s today!

>>Update: where is Holman? I'm from Portage (born in Madison).
