The snow hasn't been so bad in recent years, but the Winters are still long and cold. The mosquitos, too. Ok, you've convinced me. I'm moving to NC. :)

>Portage is 40 miles north of Madison on the Wisconsin River. It is easily accessible off of I90-94, Hwy78 and US51. It is beautiful there of course (just like the rest of Wisconsin) and has the richest black soil I have ever seen. If only the winters were not so long! I remember snow storms in May and months of snowmobiling...and then there is those hot, sticky summers and the mosquitos! Swarms of them. I'm sure I received more toxins in my system from running behind the mosquito spraying trucks when I was young than from anything else in my lifetime. I have relatives all over Wisconsin and many up north near Bloomer (my father's parents moved there directly from Norway). We used to go to Bloomer in the summer.
