You've described the way that I try to handle my messages.

One thing I'd like to see - for the VFP-specific categories (i.e. not for Chatter or Contracts... or product-specific categories) - is a standard 'header' in the body of the message (or elsewhere in a message, if appropriate) that lets the originator specify things like VFP version and SP level, Workstation OS, network OS, etc. I think this would help to "remind" people to provide as much information as possible when initially submitting a problem or question or comment.

I would post anything related to VFP8 in VFP8 category because it'll get more attention at this point. However if you're using VFP8 but your question isn't directly related to VFP8, you may post in any category you find appropriate.
