No, it's not possible to just use the reader to print w/o the document becoming visible. I tried (lots of different ways). About the best I could do was make a relatively small window appear, print the PDF, then disappear. It looks like the display is part of Acrobats rendering process.

Yes, it's possible. The small window you see, is a splash screen. You can go into Acrobat Reader preferences and uncheck it.
