Denis,

One of those French economic ties is with RJR Nabisco's or Philip Morris' (I forget which) sale of cigarettes to Iraq.
That trade was so valuable that the French salesman responsible and the boss of the French subsidiary were both treated to a lavish visit to head office in the U.S. by private jet and all the trimmings.
Then the French government foubd out and told them that the embargo didn't allow such trade, to it was moved to some other place (Kuwait I believe).

It is a most common trick of corporations - not missed by U.S. ones - to circumvent embargoes by having subsidiaries do the deals. They even create subsidiaries for that purpose.

So it is vey had to tell for sure WHO a "trade tie" really is with.
