Windows 2000 and XP use oportunistic locking. Maybe this is the issue. Try to disable oportunistic locking by editing registry on server:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters]
Try to change "EnableOplocks" value to 0.
