If I put WORKGROUP in the blank and click OK it tells me there is no domain to validate my user id and it won't let me start windows until I give it one, but there's none to give it! Is there a registry entry or something that will let me set it back to the networking login with just the user id and password?

Try going into Network Control Panel applet, and looking at properties for Client for MS Networking. Somewhere is a check box about logging into Windows NT domain. Clear out whatever no longer applies. You'll probably have to re-boot after this. :(
